Choosing appropriate technologies to recycle waste water is essential to overcome the acute water shortage in many cities and towns in the country, Member Secretary of AP Pollution Control Board B.S.S. Prasad has said. At the inaugural of a workshop on ‘Smart technologies for waste management in smart cities’, organised by the State-level Expert Appraisal Committee and the State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority, here on Thursday, he called for reduction of water wastage, both in the domestic and industrial sectors.
Mr. Prasad said that while cost was a major constraint in the past, many companies were now providing cost-effective technological solutions. There were also many funding options. The civic bodies and industries should adopt these technologies to curb pollution of water bodies. Dumping wastes in rivers and the seas was not pardonable. He said that cities like Visakhapatnam, which were poised to graduate into smart cities, should set an example for others.
APPSC Chairman Uday Bhaskar said customisation of technologies was a crucial factor and the socio-economic conditions should also be carefully studied before introducing a new technology.
A. Satyanarayana of Sai Enviro Engineers Private Limited and representatives of technology providing companies explained the relevant recycling technologies — membrane technology for domestic and anaerobic technologies for industrial waste water.
