Department of Geophysics of Andhra University has received good support from the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (Navi Mumbai) through the extension of a MoU between the two institutions.
The national institution, under the Department of Science and Technology, has agreed to provide financial support to the field visits of the department’s students and to research programmes of its faculty. The department will receive financial assistance of Rs.5 lakh for every three years for five terms (15 years). The MoU was singed by Registrar of Andhra University K. Rama Mohana Rao and Director of IIG and noted scientist D.S. Ramesh in the presence of AU Vice-Chancellor G.S.N. Raju, Rector E.A. Narayana, former Rector A. Rajendra Prasad, and IIG Registrar G. Jayakumar.
The IIG had established one of its magnetic observatories on the AU campus at Sivajipalem in 1990 and mutual exchange of faculty had been going on since then. The IIG was providing junior and senior Fellowship to the AU department and the students and faculty was also accessing some e-journals and books. Field training was also being provided to the students.
The MoU would help the department access the data of the observatories here and at other places, more e-journals, and books. Prof. Raju thanked the IIG for extending its support to the university.
Dr. Ramesh also announced that PG students of AU would be provided free accommodation at the IIG, Navi Mumbai, and given allowance. They can also use the equipment and participate in collaborative research activities.
