Bio-toilets to come up in a big way

September 16, 2014 01:06 am | Updated 01:06 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Apart from ‘Namma toilets’ and e-toilets, GVMC will go in a big way for bio-toilets too. They will come up in a total of 40 places in the city, including five at Arilova.

The bio-toilets are developed by DRDO and Administrative Staff College of India. Each of them costs around Rs.35,000 and will have ‘digesters’ instead of flush.

Municipal Commissioner M. V. Satyanarayana said apart from bio-toilets, digesters will also be used in the One Town area to tackle the problem of directly connecting toilets to the drainage. If no place was available, 10 to 15 houses will be connected to digesters at one point.

Namma toilets based on Tamil Nadu model would be directly linked to underground drainage and would come up at five places. Made of fibre glass they would come up at Ramakrishna Beach, VUDA Park, RTC Complex, Railway Station and NAD. For Namma toilets, however, sponsorship from commercial establishments would be sought.

Besides, e-toilets were set up at Jagadamba Junction, Beach Road and Diamond Park. They require overhead water supply and where it was not possible water was provided in a tub.

Mr. Satyanarayana said only for e-toilets a coin of Rs.2 or above has to be inserted for use. For other toilets, either set up or proposed, no charge would be collected.
