A demonstration was organised villagers of Atchihapeta of Sundarayyapeta Panchayat in Anakapalle Mandal at the Gandhi statue at Asilametta here on Saturday to protest against the dumping of wastes generated in Anakapalle Municipality in their village.
It may be recalled that the villagers, under the aegis of Akhila Paksha Praja Sanghala Aikhya Vedika, had been protesting for the past several days against the dumping of wastes near their village.
Memorandum
Andhra Pradesh Vyavasaya Vruttidarula Union P.S. Ajay Kumar said that a memorandum was submitted to the Superintendent of Police seeking a probe and action against the Deputy Superintendent of Police and other officials for the illegal detention and issuing of threats to the villagers.
He said that the villagers were arrested when they insisted on a copy of the resolution made by the Panchayat and the Pollution Control Board, when the officials went to the village to dump wastes on March 23.
He alleged that the Anakapalle Municipal Commissioner and the Tehsildar had violated the rules by not consulting the villagers or conducting a gram sabha before deciding to dump the wastes in the village.
He appealed to the District Collector and other officials to visit the village and find out the truth. The Aikya Vedika is organising a ‘Chalo Atchiyyapeta’ on Sunday.
Traditional Fish Workers Forum Teddu Shankar and a representative of Movement for People Centred Development J.V. Ratnam were present.
