The Asilmetta flyover is, at last, ready for inauguration. Facing several hurdles and after a series of postponements, end of June was the final date for set for completion by Investment and Infrastructure Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao and GVMC Commissioner M.V. Satyanarayana.
The Commissioner said on Monday that the flyover would, in all likelihood, be inaugurated in the second week of July.
The 1.6 km flyover has been taken up as a part of the Pendurti corridor of the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission with an estimated cost of Rs. 90 crore. The foundation was laid in December 2008 and the work then was scheduled for completion in two years.
However, increasing its length, fund-crunch, land acquisition problems have inordinately delayed the work. The service roads, however, may take some more time for completion. One of the major roadblocks – getting the land belonging to a petrol outlet – has been solved with the owners agreeing to give 640 square yards of land. It has been hanging fire for a long time and the owner has agreed to give land only after the district Collector issued a land acquisition notice.
The other petrol bunk owner had also agreed to give land after the corporation agreed to name the road after the daughter of the owner.
