The Asilmetta flyover taken up as part of the Pendurti corridor Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) is now likely to be completed by June.
“Work on the last span is going on now and it would be completed by the end of the month. Later other works like electrification, railing and drainage will also be carried out simultaneously and completed by June,” Municipal Commissioner M. V. Satyanarayana said on Tuesday.
Work on the 1.62-km flyover, costing Rs.90 crore, has been launched as part of the BRTS corridor.
The flyover work that began towards the end of 2008 was originally scheduled for completion in two years. A host of factors, including increasing its length midway and paucity of funds, has led to inordinate delay in its completion.
A sub-way taken up as a traffic decongestion move has already been completed and made operational.
“Part of the delay has been caused owing to the design selected that uses moulds for the spans. It was earlier used for the PV Narasimha Rao express highway in Hyderabad. The contractor has only three moulds which he had to use in rotation,” Mr. Satyanarayana told The Hindu .
The other problems like acquisition of land from the Railways and private properties have led to a delay of two years. Now acquisition of 750 sq m of Railway land has been completed and shifting of compound walls has been going on. Similarly, all the 36 private properties have been acquired.
