Silence resonates in Abid Nagar and is broken only by the distant cries of an ice-cream vendor and the hawkers selling seasonal produce. Welcome to a colony where for decades now, people from different communities and walks of life lead an amicable existence.

The canopy of avenue trees offers a visual treat bringing respite from the scorching rays of the sun. Besides, the sprawling complex of spacious and attractive buildings, Urdu library and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Shadikhana form a part of Abid Nagar.

Since the colony is surrounded by Narasimha Nagar, NH16 and Akkayyapalem, the residents say that the place is an ultimate destination for all age groups. From banks to schools, departmental stores to vegetable market and hospitals, everything is accessible within a km radius.

“Life in Abid Nagar is quite peaceful and harmonious. Our neighbours come together to celebrate festivals and special occasions. Apparently, easy access to bus stop and other centres is one of the reasons why the locality has been most preferred by both older and younger generations,” says R. Narasinga Rao, a retired employee who has been living in the colony since 1990.

Earlier, there were no approach roads. The locality was dotted with a plenty of thatched houses as the area was dominated by slum- dwellers. Over the years, employees from different establishments purchased sites and built homes. Now, the neighbourhood houses thousands of residents who enjoy cool breeze with ample ventilation.

Slum-dwellers in the colony make a living by selling snacks on wheels.

Get-togethers

Women say that they like to keep themselves occupied with a row of combined initiatives. Every week some of them meet at a commonplace to chant devotional hymns and ‘slokas’. Sai Sree, a third year engineering student says: “The colony is absolutely hassle-free and most youngsters feel that the place is an ideal choice to prepare for examinations.”
