All 60 seats filled in IIM-Vizag, classes from September 21

It has done well in admissions though cut off marks on par with IIM-B

September 16, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:48 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

When compared to some of the fourth generation Indian Institute of Managements (IIM) in the country, all the 60 seats at IIM – Visakhapatnam have been filled, and the institute is all set to start operating from September 21.

While the seats in some of the fourth generation institutes are yet to be filled, IIM-V has done well, despite the cut off marks being on par with the premier mentor Institute IIM-Bangalore. Among the 60 students selected, four are girls.

While the institute will be inaugurated on September 21, regular classes are scheduled to begin from September 28, after a week-long orientation programme. During the first year of its operation, the entire faculty will be flying down from the mentor institute (IIM-B) on a weekly basis, till the new institute has its own director.

According to Sourav Mukherji, Dean- Programmes (IIM-B), the new institute will have its own director in about six months to one year’s time and the recruitment process will begin thereafter.

The society for IIM-V is in the formation stage and once the board of directors is established the institute will slowly start functioning on its own. It is expected that IIM-B will mentor the institute for the next two to three years.

For the time being, IIM-V will function from the Andhra Bank School of Business on the Andhra University campus and will move to its own campus at the 300-acre site allotted at Gambheeram, located about 20–km from the heart of the city.

According to HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, who visited the IIM-V’s temporary campus to assess the progress on Tuesday, the 300-acre site has already been alienated and the government has to build a boundary wall, before handing it over to the IIM management.

From the IIM’s side, the board has to be constituted before taking the site from the government. “Once both the formalities are over, the construction would begin. It is expected that IIM-V will move to its own campus in three years,” said the HRD Minister.

Explaining the teaching model, Mr. Sourav said the classrooms have been designed as per the Havard Business School model, as the teaching methodology is case study based. “This semicircle gallery model helps better interaction between the teacher and the students,” he said.

“Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s presence during the inauguration depends on his Singapore tour programme. Union And as far as Central HRD Minister Smriti Irani’s participation is yet to be confirmed though is concerned both the IIM-B management and we are urging her to attend the programme, but it is yet to be confirmed,” Mr. Ganta Srinivasa Rao told The Hindu .
