In a corner of the hall, participants were busy giving finishing touches to their edible bouquet made of assorted chocolates. At the other end, a group of children and men were engaged in indoor games. A few women in the dressing room were seen applying blush to their cheeks and completing the look with trinkets before heading to the stage to take part in the next contest.

From dawn to dusk, Swarna Bharati Indoor Stadium witnessed a flurry of activity on Sunday as the Agarwal community came together to celebrate Agrasen jayanti a few days ahead of the annual event.

The intermittent rain did not stop men, women and children from getting their share of fun, engaging themselves in fun-filled activities. With sari-draping, salad decoration, button art, sloka recitation, dance, chess, carom and badminton competitions held through the day, the floor had something for everyone.

“The celebrations bring us closer to offer tributes to the founder of the community Maharaj Agrasen who propagated the concept of ‘a rupee’ and ‘a brick’, promoting the business culture and underlining the need to own a house,” said Vijay Kumar Choudhary, president of Agarwal Mahasabha.

Those who took part in a range of contests felt that the platform gave them an opportunity to unlock their creativity. For Sangeeta Choudhary, the avenue provided a chance to exhibit her chocolate-making expertise which she learnt a couple of months ago.

Giving a creative touch to an edible bouquet, Anupama Agarwal said: “I tried to depict the progress of seven generations from great grandparents to great grandchildren incorporating a combination of chocolates, toffees, gems, lollipops and artificial plants and flowers.”

A few innovative games find their place in the list too. “It required a week-long meticulous planning to set the parameters and scores for each competition. We worked in teams and learnt the importance of adopting the best practices for effective execution,” said Shalu Agarwal, president of Agarwal Mahila Samithi.

Cultural show

On October 1, Kolkata-based troupe will be treating the audience to a cultural show at AMCOSA function hall to mark Maharaj Agrasen’s birth anniversary from 4.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

The celebrations bring us closer to offer tributes to the founder of the community.
