In today’s fast-paced world where fitness has become top priority for many, intense conventional workout is passé as women are keen on exploring newer versions adding a dash of fun and excitement to their daily exercise sessions.

Weaving wellness, entertainment and body toning together, most women, especially those aged between 30 and 45, are finding dance workshops an interesting way to shed their extra pounds.

Those who have been practising zumba, salsa, hip-hop and western dance styles for quite some time now feel that the platform allows them to break away from the conventional mould. “It is exciting to slip into a trendy outfit and join the dance session along with the younger crowd. Initially, I felt a little embarrassed to move along with the slim waist girls in the group. But now I am more at ease,” says E. Sirisha, a homemaker who is learning western dance at MusiCafé, school of fine arts, Muralinagar.

Summer seems to be the perfect season for passionate dancers to hone their dancing skills as well. “I feel dance is a part of me as it reflects my personality and acts as a great stress buster. Most of my holiday time is spent picking up the nuances of dance as I am very passionate about the art form that comes in different formats like hip-hop, B-boying, locking and popping,” says Roopsha Bhattacharjee, a Class XII student.

Beat monotony

Fitness enthusiasts say dancing for an hour helps them be themselves while getting the flab off their body. “I find it an arduous exercise to hit the gym everyday and dedicate an hour doing conventional workout on equipment without placing my heart. However, doing the hip twists in a group gives me added vigour to compete with myself and push my dancing abilities to the next level,” says V. Padmini, a mother of two children who has switched to western dance classes recently.

Trainers say dance workshops provide required fun element to enjoy the workout session regularly.

“There is a steady rise in the number of homemakers enrolling for dance classes over the last eight years as they find the one-hour long regimen quite refreshing. This way, they can combine entertainment and fitness without getting bored,” says Faiz Begum, licensed instructor at Faiz Fitness Studio.
