Weavers from across the country are showcasing silk sarees and various other silk products at the ‘Silk India Expo’ that was inaugurated at The Gateway hotel here on Wednesday.

The six-day exhibition-cum-sale is being organised by Hastashilpi – Artisans and Weavers Welfare Association. T. Abhinand, managing director of Hastashilpi, said the main objective of the association was to provide the weavers from different regions a platform to exhibit their products and directly engage with the consumers.

The exhibition has representation from almost every part of the country and showcases some of the dying traditional artworks of the country.

For instance, the batik work sarees, which are painstakingly done by artisans in West Bengal, are now struggling to survive due to lack of patronage as well as the laborious procedure involved in making these.

Kalamkari finds a place in various forms at the exhibition with Maheshwari silks and Chanderi fabrics. The summer favourite fabric of linens is showcased in an array of shades and styles in saris. The exhibition will be on till April 2.
