The road below the flyover, that connects Chavulamadum to Scindia, is categorised as one of the most accident- prone zones, by the City Traffic Police.
It is not because it lacks policing or it is used by heavy trucks and tippers that ply between Visakahapatnam Port Trust and the Central Warehousing Godowns, but it is primarily due to condition of the road. About 80 per cent of the road is in a rundown condition, littered with huge potholes and importantly the road is covered with slush throughout the year, thanks to the coal and urea dust that spills from the trucks during their movement.
The slush is the factor that makes the road dangerous, as most of the vehicles, especially the two-wheelers, skid on the road. And it needs immediate attention, says Assistant Commissioner of Police (traffic) L. Arjun.
The slush is formed due to the sprinkling of water by tankers to suppress the coal, urea and other fertilizer dust. “One way it is good that water is sprinkled to suppress the dust, but on the other hand is has become a menace, as the road has become very slippery,” says Srinivas Rao, an employee of Naval Dockyard. This road is used by most of the employees of Navy, Naval Dockyard, Hindustan Shipyard and other companies such as Coromandel Fertilizers and HPCL. Last year there were about 70 accidents on the road, and of which about eight were fatal and a number of skidding cases have gone unrecorded, says a source in the traffic wing.
