The first colony developed with a thrust on providing housing to economically weaker sections (EWS), lower, and middle income groups, this sector in Muvvalavanipalem, popularly known as MVP, of late, has turned into an upmarket area with all modern amenities.
Located at the foothills of Kailasagiri and close to MVP Circle, the heart of the posh residential area of the city, Sector-6 boasts of having everything one wishes, with close access to hotels, departmental stores, government offices, beach road, and hospitals.
The sign of prosperity of its residents can be gauged by the fact that 60 square yards of EWS houses allotted in early 1980s have been converted into modern houses, some of them with three floors. When the colony was developed, the allotments were done on ‘first come, first served’ basis.
One among first six families to occupy the houses, P. Satya Kumar, general secretary of MVP Colony Residents’ Welfare Association (for all 12 sectors), says that initially he launched a post-card campaign asking the allottees to occupy the houses as early as possible.
“During the initial days, there were no roads, street lights, and bridges. The bus service used to be available only up to Shantiashram on the beach road and Isukathota on the National Highway, nearly one-and-half km from our sector,” he recalls.
One of the unique features of the sector is that it has six parks. Most of the parks are maintained by the residents. The colony has Siddi Vinayaka Parvati Mukteswara temple and Lord Venkateswara and Lord Anjaneyaswamy temple complex.
While the first one is maintained by the committee of devotees, the latter is managed by the temple committee with the support of Ramanuja China Jeer Swamy.
Happy lot
The committee has provided a book stall, washrooms, and sit-out, and takes care of maintaining the Srinivasa Udyana Vanam. “We are very happy with our life in the sector. It is, in fact, a paradise for senior citizens,” says temple committee member C.G. Krishna Rao. Committee secretary K. Prasad Rao has taken several initiatives to maintain the temple complex well.
Some of the residents say it will be better if the GVMC provides manpower for maintaining the parks for which they are ready to pay. MVP Colony Residents’ Welfare Association (Sector-6) maintains three parks in association with the GVMC.
With space becoming scarce, the sector is also facing the trend of boom in multi-storeyed complexes. Group housing and apartments are coming up in the place of two or three individual houses as the land cost is skyrocketing. The latest addition to the sector is the opening of VUDA Health Arena — a jogging track for health freaks all along the foothills of Kailasagiri.
