Owing to improper supervision and maintenance, GVMC Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Gymnasium Club, located at MVP Colony – Sector IV, has turned into a hub for anti-social activities.
Despite a budget of Rs.19.5 lakh allocated for its development by the GVMC authorities, residents say that the club is still in a dilapidated condition. “We have approached the authorities to begin the repair works. However, in the evenings, the place changes into a mini bar leading to other illegal activities,” says president of MVP Colony Sector – IV Residents’ Welfare Association K.M. Lakshmana Rao.
The association members say that they do not mind contributing to the gym’s monthly maintenance once the proposed renovation work is completed.
Another recurring problem faced by the colony residents is frequent traffic bottlenecks. Unfortunately, the malls, banks, hospitals and other centres in the area do not have parking space. The inconvenience is doubled when the residents have been directed to take diversions by the security staff of the former Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, who resides in the colony.
The colony women say that convincing people to come together for collective initiative is indeed a challenging task. “Women should come out of the four walls to share their knowledge. Those who are experts in training yoga or any other soft skills should come forward to train others. This kind of exchange helps in nurturing one’s interest and culture,” explains P. Ratna Latha, one of the residents.
To restrict the movement of heavy vehicles into the colony, the association members have proposed erecting girders at the entry points. However, the proposal has been pending for a long time. Keeping the security aspects and geography of the locality in mind, there is also another proposal of converting the colony into a gated community which is in the pipeline.
