The three-day 12th edition of the Paediatric Endoscopic Surgeons India (PESI) conference is all set to begin here on Friday.

Aimed at elaborating advantages of minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopy) and creating awareness among people that laparoscopic surgery involves less pain, minimal blood loss and scars, the conference, hosted for the first time in the port city, will also focus on surgical procedures followed and speedy recovery.

Organised by Omni RK Hospital and the Department of Paediatric Surgery, King George Hospital, along with Andhra Pradesh and Telangana chapters of paediatric surgeons, ‘Pesicon-2017’ will draw students, professors, practising surgeons and specialists from various parts of the nation. Experts from abroad are also attending it.

“Specialists like Hock Tan from Malaysia and Sanjeev Khurana from Australia will present lecture-demo and offer surgery tips on minimally invasive surgery. The trauma is minimal in this kind of surgical procedure compared to open surgery and can be performed on newborns as well,” said M. Srinivasa Rao, paediatric surgeon and general secretary of AP chapter of Indian Association of Paediatric Surgeons at a press conference on Wednesday.

HoD of Paediatric Surgery, KGH G. Rajendra Prasad said lack of awareness was one of the deterring factors why the surgical procedure failed to gain prominence. “The conference aims to dispel myths associated with laparoscopy. Trained surgeons and specialists in the field will highlight various techniques used to perform the operation,” he said.

Assistant Professor of Rangaraya Medical College, Kakinada, Kalyan Ravi Prasad and paediatric surgeon P.V. Ramana said video presentation of surgical procedures will form a part of the PESICON.
