659 field assistants, rozgar sevaks suspended

April 19, 2011 05:20 pm | Updated 05:20 pm IST - VIZIANAGARAM:

Keeping in view the indefinite strike by field assistants and rozgar sevaks that began on Monday in the district, the local administration is making alternative arrangements to continue MGNREGP.

A senior mate for 25 groups is being appointed to oversee works under the programme, according to R. Sreeramulu Naidu, Project Director, DWMA.

Talking to correspondents on Tuesday, Mr. Naidu said that attendance at work spots improved this morning in spite of their strike.

Stating that field assistants have no role in work muster, the PD said that orders suspending 659 field assistants and rozgar sevaks out of 948 on rolls had been dispatched to MDOs concerned.

Meanwhile, Field Assistants’ Union honorary president G. Appala Suri told a press conference that work at all work sites crippled following the indefinite strike.

Claiming that the strike was near total, he said about 4565 labourers out of 1.30lakh were engaged in a few mandals on Monday and 18 mandals registered zero attendance.

As part of the strike, field assistants and rozgar sevaks would stage a dharna at the Collector’s Office on Wednesday demanding the government to stop adopting vindictive methods and implement the Centre’s Human Resource policy and GO No.3.

Condemning the government’s indifference towards field assistants and rozgar sevaks, CITU has extended support to their strike.
