The district police seized about 1,240 kg of ganja and arrested two persons in this connection at Nakapalli on Monday.
Based on specific information from the special branch, the police stopped an empty oil tanker at the Nakapalli toll gate and confiscated the contraband stuff that was being transported in the tanker.
According to SHO of Yellamanchili circle, Venkat Rao, this was for the first time that the ganja was being smuggled in an oil tanker.
“We are aware of different modus operandi of the ganja smugglers, but this was for the first time that an oil tanker was caught,” he said.
The arrested were identified as K. Reddy Durginaidu (45) of Atchutapuram, who was the driver and owner of the vehicle and P. Chiranjeevi (25) of Rambili, cleaner of the vehicle.
According to Mr. Venkat Rao, the police are investigating to find out the person behind the smuggling deal.
“As per the confession of the accused, both of them were only the transporters of the ganja.”
The ganja was reportedly procured from some interior villages in Paderu and was going towards Kakinada.
