Tension prevailed in Amaravati town in Guntur district on Sunday as the YSR Congress and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) were at loggerheads over the Sadavarthi satram issue.
The TDP cadre tried to prevent the YSR Congress leaders who were on a visit at Amaravati. They alleged that the YSR Congress leaders were touring the district only to cast wild allegations. They cadres squatted on the road and raised slogans against each other before police dispersed them.
YSR Congress leader Dharmana Prasada Rao, Mangalagiri MLA Ramakrishna Reddy and others were present.
Meanwhile, YSR Congress spokesperson Ambati Rambabu said the TDP cadres opposed their fact finding team as they feared that the truth would come out.
Sadavarthi satram was a scam of thousands of crores of rupees. The TDP did not want the truth to come out. The YSR Congress team, however, would visit Chennai on June 26, he added.
For the record, 80 acres was allotted to the satram of the famous Amaravati temple by then zamindars in Chennai.
It is estimated that the lands are worth about Rs 1,000 crore, but were allegedly sold on a platter to the TDP leaders.
The Amaravati temple owns 473 acres in various areas of Tamil Nadu, which had been encroached in the last 70 years.
The Endowments Department fought a legal battle to get back those lands but due to technical difficulties could prove only 83 acres belonged to the satram of the Amaralingeswara temple.
