Workers hoist red flags to mark May Day

Leaders of the trade unions, government departments and political parties celebrated May Day on a grand scale in Krishna District on Wednesday. They hoisted the red flags and extended greetings to the workers.

Officials of Labour Department celebrated May Day at Sub-Collector’s office and distributed certificates and awards to the beneficiaries. Vijayawada Central MLA Malladi Vishnuvardhan, who attended the programme stressed on the need for better coordination between workers and management.

He asked the labourers to register their names with the A.P. Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board and avail the welfare schemes being sponsored by the Government.

MLC Illapuram Venkaiah said workers play a vital role in development of any industry. Collector Budha Prakash M. Jyothisaid workers and the owner should have good cordial relationship for the growth of the company. He underlined the need for awareness among workers about Labour Laws and benefits being extended by the State and Central governments.

Deputy Commissioner of Labour (DCL) S.Y. Srinivas explained about the welfare fund and schemes extended for marriage, temporary disability, natural death and maternity benefit for women labourers. The Labour Department officials distributed cheques worth Rs.21 lakh to 130 building and other construction workers, fixed deposits valued at Rs.8.50 lakh for 120 child labourers and Rs.80,000 each for four persons under marriage scheme.

Certificates and awards were presented to best mutha worker, sanitation worker, driver, construction worker and salesman at the programme, said the DCL.

At Sundaraiah Bhavan, CPI(M) State committee member V. Umamaheswara Rao hoisted the party flag to mark the May Day celebrations. CPI(M) city secretary Ch. Babu Rao flagged off a bike rally organised as part of the celebrations. CPI(M) district secretary R. Raghu and others spoke. They stressed on the need to mount pressure on governments to implement the labour laws strictly. CPI district secretary Akkineni Vanaja hoisted party flags at Kothur Tadepalli, Jakkampudi, Shabad and other villages. AITUC district executive member Yadla Kishore and others spoke. CPI city secretary Donepudi Sankar and others hoisted red flags at all divisions in the city.

Telugunadu Trade Union Congress celebrated the May Day at TDP office. TNTUC flag was hoisted at the TDP office and other place like Bus Stand, Railway Station, Rythu Bazaar etc.

TNTUC Urban president Boyina Subramanyam, TDP Vijayawada parliament constituency incharge Kesineni Srinivas (Nani), Vijayawada (Central) incharge Bonda Umamaheswara Rao and others were present.

Jaggaiahpet: The CITU Jaggaiahpet division celebrated May Day and hoisted red flag in the town. Party division secretary Metikela Srinivas and other participated in the celebrations at the CITU office. Municipal Commissioner Ravi Kumar unfurled the flag at municipal office and greeted the workers. Town Auto Workers Union Babu Rao and others attended the programmes.

Thousands of workers took out a rally here on the occasion of May Day. INTUC vice-president B. Srinath participated in the massive rally, which was taken out from Koneru Junction to Laxmi talkies centre.
