‘Exploitation high in service sector too’

Women are the most frequent consumers because they are the one who do most of the shopping for the whole household so it is very vital that they know their consumer rights, said Minister for Consumer Affairs D. Sridhar Babu.

The Minister participating as chief guest at the seminar titled “Women consumers in the new millennium- problems and prospects” at Montessori College on Monday, said that everybody was a consumer and must know his/her rights. “When we buy something we have an expectation and when the expectation is not met we have every right to protest”, said the Minister.

The two-day seminar will have resource persons from all over India talking about the different aspects of Consumer Protection Act and the day-to-day problems faced by customers. Around 40 per cent of the population have awareness about the details of the Act, said member of Central Consumer Protection Council Suresh Misra. Exploitation is prevalent mainly in the service sector so people need to be made aware of the helplines so that the problems can be rectified, he said.
