Activists of various women’s organisations staged protest at the Council Hall on the premises of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation office on Saturday demanding resignation of TDP corporators who allegedly misbehaved with women during their north India tour.

The protests were led by CPI (M) Corporator Gade Adi Lakshmi, who demanded arrest of the errant corporators particularly 25{+t}{+h}division representative Ummadi Venkateswara Rao. The corporator was booked for allegedly stalking a co-passenger at Hyderabad International Airport on Friday night.

Ms. Lakshmi alleged that the corporators had gone for a vacation in the name of knowledge tour squandering over Rs.30 lakh.

The agitating women were detained by the police and shifted to police station.

Earlier, TDP corporators led by Deputy Mayor G. Venkata Ramana Rao held a press conference supporting their colleague Venkateswara Rao. Mr. Ramana Rao said that Mr. Venkateswara Rao was misunderstood by the complainant. He dismissed the comments of opposition leaders, who called the tour as vacation.

“Mayor had approved the tour programme and we have learnt a lot of issues relating to corporation during the tour from various municipal corporations.

He reminded that in the past too the Congress corporators had taken part in similar tours. Other corporators too supported Mr. Venkateswara Rao.
