As part of the State’s initiative to promote electric cars, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation is going to replace its officers’ cars with hybrid vehicles soon.

The civic body along with various other State departments entered into an agreement for the purchase of a fleet of 24 hybrid (electric powered) vehicles with the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) on Friday.

According to municipal officials, the VMC is going to get the vehicles soon.

The EESL would provide sedan class vehicles of either the Mahindra or the Tata brand on a six-year loan agreement.

The corporation would own them after paying the loan in instalments.

However, the absence of a policy for electric vehicles came to the fore in the wake of the agreements with the EESL. While there is no official announcement on the policy, officials say it will be soon released.
