Two students, including the son of Vijayawada MLA Bonda Umamaheswara Rao, were arrested by the Guntur police on Thursday in connection with the death of a youngster in a car racing that took place at Timmapur village on the Guntur-Chilakaluripet national highway a few days ago.

Bonda Siddhart, son of the MLA and his friend Koppula Sivaram were arrested on the charge of causing the death of their friend Nagendra, an engineering student in the road race, said Yadlapadu Sub-Inspector Umamaheswara Rao. He said that cases were booked against the arrested under Sections 304-A (causing death by negligence) and 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of IPC.

According to police, Mr. Siddhart was driving a Toyota Fortuner and his friend Sivaram, a Skoda, in a road race on the highway. Nagendra was travelling in the Fortuner vehicle. The two drivers were trying to overtake each other in the race, and in a bid to avoid a lorry coming from the opposite direction, the two vehicles collided, the police said.

The vehicles, which were flung into the air, fell into a roadside ditch killing Nagendra, said the Yedlapadu police. The duo was produced in a local court.
