A Class X student, K. Chandu (16) and his friend P. Raju (20), drowned in the Krishna river, during Ganesh ‘Nimajjanam’ (immersion of idols), in the city on Saturday night.

The bodies were retrieved on Sunday.

The deceased, Chandu, was studying in the local Government High School, while Raju, a native of Vizianagaram district, was staying with his kin at Ranadev Nagar, in Krishnalanka.

The two friends along with six others entered into the river to take holy bath before the ‘nimajjanam’ , but were washed away in the swirling waters.

Police fished the bodies on Sunday morning and handed over them to the bereaved families after post-mortem, said Krishnalanka Circle Inspector T.S.R.K. Prasad.

A pall of gloom descended on the river bund with the family members of both the victims weeping inconsolably. The families were eking out their livelihood by doing some labour work and were staying on Ranadev Nagar Karakatta, said the locals.

A few days ago, three boys drowned in the Krishna river when they went for a swim, while another boy was rescued.
