Transport dept. to crackdown on cabs, online bookings

December 12, 2014 12:55 am | Updated 12:55 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

In the aftermath of Delhi incident where in, a woman was allegedly raped by the cab driver of a private company, the transport department in the State has decided to launch a crackdown on taxi and cab services, especially those facilitating online booking.

“There is no provision for online booking of cab services in the State. The department did not issue such licence for cab operators in the State and authorities have been instructed to launch a crackdown against such operators and initiate action accordingly,” said Deputy Transport Commissioner Venkateswara Rao.

Though majority of the cab operators operating in the city are registered with the department, there are complaints about a few operators facilitating online booking. Special teams would be formed to check documents (licenses and permits) of cabs and the premises they operate from, he said.

The department further advised passengers, especially women, not to opt for online bookings, instead prefer manual bookings and visit the cab operator’s office for bookings. Passengers have every right to check the driving licence and identity card of the driver and in case of any suspicion, they can lodge a complaint with local police, he informed.
