Theatre buffs keep hopes alive

March 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

The world is celebrating Theatre Day on Friday (March 27). Closer home in Vijayawada, the Ghantasala Music College at Durgapuram will host the celebrations which will be attended by the City Police Commissioner A.B. Venkateswara Rao and veteran journalist C. Raghavachari.

Every year, a prominent theatre personality sends his/her message on this significant day and the message is translated into regional languages. This year’s message is by Krysztof Worlikowski, a Polish theatre director, creator and artistic director of Nowy Teatr (New Theatre) in Warsaw.

At the Gantasala College, stage artistes will be felicitated. “Mere fulfilment of an activity for the sake of doing it is not enough. The younger generation should be encouraged for greater participation in theatre performances. A course in drama and theatre should be introduced in all schools and colleges by the Government. Activities like construction of well equipped theatres which could host good plays at regular intervals are the need of the hour,” says P. Panduranga Rao, a former stage and radio artiste.

Mr. Rao, who is also founder president of Artistes’ Association, says it is also necessary to revive monthly associations and give opportunity to amateur theatre groups to stage plays. Artistes Association was started in 1972 for promotion of drama and theatre, he recalls.
