Collector K. Ramgopal praised the The Hindu management for providing services to students under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes. He advised students to read the national newspaper to improve their knowledge on various issues.
Mr. Ramgopal lighted the lamp and inaugurated the ‘Newspaper in Education', being organised by The Hindu at Sangamitra Vidyalayam in Nellore on Monday.
Nellore Rural MLA Anam Vivekananda Reddy, Mayor Nandimandalam Bhanusri, Regional General Manager (Circulation) The Hindu, Chennai, N.Krishnan and Sangamitra Vidyalayam Correspondent K. Ravindra Reddy and others attended.
Speaking on the occasion, the Collector asked the students to inculcate the habit of reading newspapers, which were windows to the world. He advised the children to start the day by reading a good newspaper like The Hindu, which would help improve English language, communication skills.
Stating that NIE was a good programme which would enhance the quality of education and act as a guide for teachers, the Collector appealed to The Hindu management to extend the programme to rural areas also.
Mr. Vivekananda Reddy recalled the services of The Hindu to the society from its inception and lauded the management for launching NIE in Nellore district. Many people who were in good positions were readers of the English daily and The Hindu gave suggestions to great leaders through its news articles and editorials, he said and advised children to read the newspaper which was maintaining high standards for the past 131 years.
Ms.Bhanusri said NIE would train students as well as teachers on stress management, language and personality development and improve communication skills through CDs.
Mr. Krishnan said about 10 lakh students were covered under NIE, which was taken up under CSR, in 113 cities in the country. Trained resource persons would visit schools and educate children on various topics without textbooks, he said.
