The Telugu Desam Party has stated that a bandh will be observed on May 31 in protest against the steep increase in the price of petrol.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Mylavaram MLA and TDP district secretary Devineni Umamaheswara Rao said 18 political parties across the nation had given a call for Bharat bandh. In response to the call, the TDP would observe bandh in the State, he said.
Gollapudi bypass
Referring to Gollapudi bypass, the TDP leader alleged that the NHAI was changing the design to suit the needs of businessmen and corporate companies. Small and marginal farmers were at the receiving end due to the changes being proposed by the NHAI. A memorandum was submitted to the district Collector urging him to initiate necessary action in this regard. The NHAI was requested to conduct a survey duly following Gazette-1 and shelve the proposal of Gazette-2, he said.
TDP Urban president Vallabhaneni Vamsi said the UPA had promised to bring down the spiralling prices in 100 days if it was voted to power in 2009. But, it increased the price of petrol and diesel 30 times under the garb of international prices of crude oil and fall in the value of rupee. The government was giving subsidy to aviation fuel, which benefited only the rich and the affluent. It increased the price of petrol as it had no concern for the common man, he alleged.
TDP State general secretary Bonda Umamaheswara Rao said petrol was Rs. 40 per litre in 2004. It touched Rs. 80 now, and the credit went to the UPA government.
Party State executive secretary K. Nagul Meera, urban general secretary Songa Ravindra Varma, and vice-president Mushti Srinivas were present.
