Sri Durga Malleswara Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala students produced a documentary film titled ‘Gooti kosam koti paatlu’ on slums in the city.
Screening the film at a programme here on Thursday, the students said that they surveyed six slums - Vambay Colony, Gunadala Christurajupuram in the city with more than 100 slums. The slum dwellers shared their woes, experiences and problems faced by them.
The slum-dwellers don’t like to call their habitations slums and look for dignity in society. The residents would like to call their localities as Kashtajeevula colony, Gandhi colony, Abhyudaya Colony, Sramikula Colony etc. instead of slums, the students said.
The dwellers were living in miserable conditions with no proper infrastructure. They wanted the government to implement special welfare schemes and self-employment schemes for their development, the students said.
Joint Collector P. Usha Kumari, who released the DVDs of documentary, said that education would alone bring development and progress in the life. There may be variations in facilities at disposal of the students. However, there was no variation in time. Every student had 24 hour in a day. They should make best use of available time as education was essentially foundation of everything. The students/youth play a pivotal role in the development of any nation, she said, adding, the students should try to be good citizens of the nation.
Siddhartha Academy of General and Technical Education president N. Venkateswarlu, college principal T. Vijay Lakshmi, and Economics Department Head G. Pramila Kumari were present.
