Boring lectures and voluminous writings on some sensitive issue in society do not go down well with the student community.
The Andhra Loyola College Visual Communication Department has come up with the idea of staging ‘street plays’ at several locations to draw the attention to the burning issue of gender bias.
The streetplays were kick-started by 70-odd students after days of practice, and the result was there before them. The 35-minute skit was an instant hit when it was staged in their own college, in Montessori Mahila Kalasala, SRR Degree College, and at four other locations.
The streetplay named ‘Wipe Out – Ensuring Gender Equality’ begins with the birth of a girl child, and how the parents and family members react to it. Majority of them do not take it as a happy occasion and see it as a burden. The play focuses on infanticide, girl child education, and domestic violence. The play goes on to bring about awareness on the need for developing individualism among girls and protecting themselves through economic empowerment.
