Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) national president Ashfaq Ahmed Shareef has urged the Central government to suppress terrorist activities with an iron hand in India.
He asked students and youth to keep away from communal elements in wake of the al-Qaeda’s tapes announcing that they would spread their activities in India. Responding to media queries after attending a meeting of the SIO here on Sunday, Mr. Ashfaq said the SIO was opposed to terrorist activities by groups including al-Qaeda, which was causing communal violence and creating unrest among people.
The government should take steps to prevent the spread of such groups in India, he said. “The Centre should verify whether the video tapes purportedly released by al-Qaeda are genuine or not. I appeal to the students and the youth to keep away from terrorist groups. The intelligence agencies should step up vigil to prevent the activities of terrorist outfits in Bharat,” he said.
Communal riots On communal riots across the country, the SIO national president said as many as 600 incidents related to communal violence had been reported in India, most of which were reported from Uttar Pradesh.
