Police investigating into the firing incident at G. Konduru police station are trying to find out on how S. Krishna Rao and P. Narasimha Rao, who were said to be followers of Mylavaram Circle Inspector U. Bangaru Raju, suffered bullet injuries in the incident.
The CI took some private persons along with him while trying to control the situation at G. Konduru police station at around 5.30 p.m. on July 7.
Krishna Rao and Narasimha Rao of Mylavaram town were among the four persons injured.
Mr. Krishna Rao suffered bullet injury in the chest and his condition is stated to be critical. Narasimha Rao lost his right kidney as the bullet badly damaged it.
Two other injured persons – G. Venkat Rao and S.V. Surya Narayana – natives of Koduru village, are recovering.
According to the CI, the protestors tried to attack him soon after he arrived at the police station.
But, it was not clear how Mr. Krishna Rao and Mr. Narasimha Rao, who were standing behind Mr. Bangaru Raju suffered injuries in the firing.
“Ricochet (bullets injuring a person after hitting a hard object) might have occurred in case of the two victims. If the weapon is not aimed properly or due to indiscriminate firing, there are chances of ricochet,” said a police officer preferring anonymity.
“The CI used 9 mm pistol which had 10 bullets in the magazine. Mr. Bangaru Raju said he fired a few rounds into air, before pointing towards the agitators. Had our police maintained some restraint, the situation would not have turned violent. Now, the police are in self-defence due to the excesses of G. Konduru SI and Mylavaram CI,” the police officer said.
Superintendent of Police J. Prabhakara Rao said that the reason for the firing, how the four persons suffered bullet injuries and how many rounds were fired would be known during magisterial enquiry.
