Regional animal disease lab coming up in Vijayawada

The Animal Husbandry Department is constructing a Regional Laboratory for Animal Disease Diagnosis, at a cost of Rs. 2.04 crore, at Labbipet, in the city. The regional laboratory will be the referral centre for nine districts. A mobile laboratory would also come up in the regional laboratory, said Animal Husbandry Krishna District Joint Director T. Damodara Naidu.

“The government has sanctioned Rs.1 crore for the building and Rs.1.04 crore for equipment. Foundation stone will be laid, once the tender process is completed”, Mr. Naidu told The Hindu .

Cases from coastal districts would be treated in the proposed laboratory. Serum analysis, blood and dung tests, automatic analyser, differential diagnosis, total blood picture, scanning, pregnancy and abortion cases of all domestic animals would be tested for treatment in the new animal disease diagnosis centre.

A Deputy Director, three Assistant Directors of pathology, micro-biology and para-cytology and three assistant veterinary surgeons will be deputed in the laboratory, said the Joint Director.

A Super Speciality Hospital is also coming up in the city with an investment of about Rs.3.5 crore. The hospital is under construction and it would be inaugurated soon, said Cattle Development Officer (CDO) and head of the District Census Cell M. Kameshwar Rao Pant.

Specialist doctors would be appointed in the super specialty hospital, said the CDO.

As per 2007 census, about 1.02 lakh cows, 8.58 lakh buffaloes, 4.21 lakh sheep, 1.31 lakh goats, 9.63 lakh country chicks are there in Krishna district. The government has started collecting the livestock census from September 15, said Mr. Pant.
