The city police are planning to install CCTVs at crime-prone areas to act as a deterrent and to detect crimes. As part of it, they are identifying the vulnerable and problematic areas in the city.
Recently, the Machavaram police identified the accused through Closed Circuit Televisions (CCTVs) in a case, in which a rowdy sheeter and his henchmen attacked labourers at Moghulrajpuram over collecting ‘mamools’. City Police Commissioner D. Gautam Sawang said CCTVs have become the vital source for police to track the accused and solve cases. Police will launch a sensitisation programme for traders, cinema owners and residents in setting up more CCTVs, he said. On Thursday, police solved a theft case through CCTV footages. The Machavaram police identified the accused and recovered the gold ornaments in the case. “In some colonies, residents have set up CCTVs. More than 1,500 cameras were installed at different places in the city. We request bankers, bullion merchants and the mall and showroom owners to install high resolution cameras which will help police to identify the accused when a crime occurs,” said Mr. Sawang.
Police installed some cameras at some problematic areas, colonies, junctions and VVIP security zones. We want to set up more cameras in the coming days with the help of public, the Commissioner said.
Command control
“Very soon we will connect the cameras at all vital points to the Command Control to be set up at Police Control Room (PCR). The staff at the PCR will be monitoring the cameras to prevent crime,” Mr. Sawang said. Police are also planning to install big screens (like home theatres) at the PCR and at the City Police Commissioner’s office, to track the CCTVs installed at different points. Through big screens, investigation officers can watch the footages with more clarity and identify the accused, the police commissioner added.
