Bike racers are unleashing terror on main roads, especially those on the city outskirts. Despite stern warning from police, the racers resort to rash driving, posing threat to pedestrians.
The East Zone police arrested some students in the last few months for organising bike races on Auto Nagar-Kankipadu road and other sub-roads. Police also warned them of severe action. The Penamaluru police recently summoned parents of students who organised bike races and counselled them. Still, some are driving powerful bikes at high speed by blowing horns in high decibels.
The recent death of G. Nanda Kumar, a first year engineering student of Koneru Lakshmaiah University in a road accident points to how rules are violated leading to mishaps.
“There is a ban on first year students riding the bikes, as many of them are under-aged and do not possess driving licence,” said S. Venkateswarlu, head of the Department Mechanical Engineering, KLU.
“Though the curve at Kunchanapalli village on the Koneru Lakshmaiah University approach road is sharp, students take a turn at high speed,” said Babu, a villager. “We request parents not to give bikes to students, and to keep a watch on their movements. Particularly, students staying in hostels are often being booked for drink driving,” a police officer said.
