Krishna District Table Tennis Association should make efforts to host senior nationals as the city has all the necessary facilities to host the prestigious tournament, said Krishna District Olympic Association secretary K.P. Rao in Vijayawada on Friday.
Speaking at the inaugural of the Andhra Pradesh State ranking table tennis tournament at DRRMC Indoor Stadium, Mr. Rao said that Vijayawada had hosted several domestic tournaments earlier and hosting senior nationals would help it gear up for bigger challenges in future. “The local players can watch top national players in action. With some modifications, the indoor stadium can host the best of events. The corporation should take up the required renovation works according to modern standards,” he said.
Sunflower Group of Institutions Chairman Punnam Raju, the main sponsor of the event, said that he was proud to be associated with table tennis and appreciated the team work and passion exhibited by the district administrators in promoting the game. “Despite the ongoing agitation, the organisers have made all the arrangements both for players and officials for successful conduct of the event,” he added. Paddlers from Andhra Pradesh like Nikhat Banu, A. Sreeja and Naina, who represented India in international events, would be seen in action. However, city’s well-known player Karnam Spoorthy would be missing in action as she decided to forfeit the season owing to academic compulsions. “As she is preparing for senior intermediate and for medical entrance exam, she has decided to skip the current season,” said her father Mr. Balaram.
