Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET) Principal Director S. Sugumar has said that the plastics industry has the potential to create more than a million jobs in addition to 11 lakh currently working in the sector.
Addressing mediapersons here on the eve of foundation stone laying for CIPET at Surampalli near Gannavaram, Mr. Sugumar said plastics have myriad applications in automobiles, aerospace, construction, information technology, electronics and telecommunications and healthcare, among other sectors.
The CIPET was focussing on imparting the necessary skills to youth who have basic educational and technical qualifications, to meet the manpower requirement of the industries.
About CIPET campus being established near Gannavaram, Mr. Sugumar said the buildings would cost Rs. 50 crore and would have all the facilities for top-class training. The institute trained 730 candidates so far in the classes temporarily organised on the premises of Vijayawada Auto Cluster Development Company Limited for over a year. At the national level, 70,000-plus candidates were trained.
Mr. Sugumar said 3 per cent of those trained by CIPET set up their own units and were manufacturing diverse products to the tune of Rs. 150 crore every year.
