Physiotherapists across the country are on a warpath demanding constitution of an independent central physiotherapy council on the lines of Medical Council of India and Dental Council of India. The Indian Association of Physiotherapists (IAP) has called for protests across the country in support of the demand on Sunday (July 16).
In the city, members of Vijayawada Physiotherapy Association will stage a hunger strike at Dharna Chowk, Alankar Centre, to press for their demand for constitution of Andhra Pradesh State Physiotherapy Council.
“Physiotherapy is an extremely important healthcare profession and currently there are 296 colleges across the nation offering under-graduate (BPT) programme spanning four and half years, besides 116 colleges offering Masters in Physiotherapy (MPT) of two years. As many as 16 colleges and 11 universities in the country offer a four-year-long Ph.D programme,” said Olos Gora, president-elect, Vijayawada Physiotherapists’ Association.
The president-elect of the association said that advances in physiotherapy interventions had made this branch of modern medicine need of the hour.
