‘Physical activity must for fitness’

City Police Commissioner D. Gautam Sawang has asked students to inculcate good eating habits and practise physical exercises from young age for maintaining good health.

Participating in the World Heart Day event organised by The Hindu in association with Heart and Brain Institute of Andhra Hospitals at Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation (IGMC) Stadium on Tuesday, he said that physical activity should be part of daily life for every person for leading a healthy life.

“For maintaining good health, good food habits, yoga, walking and physical exercises are a must,” Mr. Sawang said and thanked the doctors and walkers associations for sensitising the public on health aspects through various programmes.The city police chief asked the educational institutions to allocate some time for students to play game, sports and yoga as that will relieve them from stress and keep their body fit.

Senior Interventional Cardiologist of Andhra Hospitals Dr. J. Srimanarayana advised people to maintain ideal body weight, do regular physical activity, avoiding smoking and unhealthy diet to keep away cardiac diseases.

Stating that 10 per cent of urban population and six per cent of rural people are suffering from diabetes, who are prone to heart diseases, he advised people to maintain blood pressure, stress levels and practise aerobic exercised such as cycling, brisk walking, swimming and jogging to prevent cardiac problems. “Regular walking and body exercises will reduce weight. Due to child obesity, children are suffering from diabetes and blood pressure,” Dr. Srimanarayana said and stressed the need for physical activity among students.

Walkers International District Association (202) Governor G.D.V. Prasada Rao explained how junk foods are causing ill health and asked people to avoid them.

Dr. Ramesh, Cardiac Anaesthetist of Andhra Hospitals, asked the parents to train the children in consuming healthy diet and give them healthy life which helps them keep their body fit.

Later, the Police Commissioner flagged off the walk from the stadium. Managing Director, Chief Surgical Gastroenterologist Dr. P.V. Ramana Murthy, Chief Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Dileep, chief marketing manager of Andhra Hospitals Atluri Nagendra Babu and The Hindu Assistant Regional General Manager V. V. Raja Rao participated in the walk. NSS volunteers and NCC cadets of Nalanda Degree College, Walkers Association members of Siddhartha, NSM School and IGMC, Nursing Colleges students of Andhra Hospitals also participated in the event.
