A senior citizen standing in a queue to get her name enrolled at Chittinagar post office pension centre in 32 division in the city died after a commotion in the queue early morning today.
According to local residents, braving cold weather, 65-year-old Padala Shantamma came to the centre at 3.30 a.m. to get her name enrolled for pensions. As per practice, all eligible pensioners her given pension slips at the centre and those who get the slips are paid amount in the post office.
Like Shantamma many others were already waiting for their turn at the centre and about 5.30 a.m. there was a ruckus with everyone trying to get into the centre. In the process, Shantamma fell on the rocks adjacent to the queue and sustained chest injuries.
She was immediately shifted to a local hospital and later was taken to Government General Hospital. She reportedly died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has ordered a probe in to the incident.
