New Delhi-based National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) is planning to set up its training academy in the proposed capital region in Andhra Pradesh.
The institute will train personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) and Andhra Pradesh Special Police (APSP) Additional Director-General Gautam Sawang said.
Speaking after visiting the NDRF 10{+t}{+h}Battalion base camp at Mangalagiri in Guntur district on Friday, he said the NIDM would train personnel on various disaster risk management methods. “Training will be imparted to NDRF and SDRF personnel on rescue operations and life-saving techniques during natural calamities such as earthquakes, floods, cyclones, chemical, biological and radiological emergencies, landslides and other disasters,” Mr. Sawang added.
SDRF companies
The government is planning to set up a State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) on the lines of the NDRF. Personnel from APSP will be absorbed into the SDRF, which will take up rescue operations during calamities in the State, Mr. Sawang said.
“The SDRF will be formed with five companies at Kakinada, Venkatagiri (Nellore district), Visakhapatnam, Kurnool and Vizianagaram, where APSP Battalions are present, and each company will have two teams with 50 members each,” he added.
NDRF 10{+t}{+h}Battalion Commandant Prasanth Dar, Second-in-Commandant Sanjay Kumar, APSP Commandants from Kurnool, Kakinada, Mangalagiri, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and Venkatagiri Battalions accompanied the officer.
