April 16, 2013 01:32 pm | Updated 01:32 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA:

The Penamaluru police have opened suspect sheets against 14 youths, including some engineering students, who were participating in bike races on the city outskirts. The accused were produced in a court on Monday.

On a tip off, the police arrested the youth who were participating in bike races in groups on the main road near Tadigadapa, and seized 14 two-wheelers. The arrested students were pursuing engineering in various private engineering colleges, said Penamaluru Circle Inspector K. Dharmendra. “On several occasions, we warned the students not to organise bike races and cause trouble for other commuters. All the 14 youths were found driving the bikes with high speed on 100 feet road. We will keep a vigil on the movements of the youth, against whom suspect sheets were opened”, said the CI. Cases were booked against the accused under Section.279 of IPC (Rash and negligence driving). The magistrate imposed fine on all the accused. Police will summon the parents of the students and counsel them.

“We request the youth not to spoil their lives by facing police cases and meeting with road accidents. Police received complaints from the public and residents on bike races in the locality and we have kept a vigil on rash and negligent driving”, Mr. Dharmendra said.
