A delegation of the Telugu Desam Party leaders comprising the farmers owing allegiance to the Telugu Rythu, the farmers wing of the party, led by Sathupalli MLA Sandra Venkata Veeraiah submitted a memorandum to the Collector N. Nageswara Rao here on Tuesday seeking release of water from Nagarjunasagar Project (NSP) for the second and third zones under the NSP command area in the district.
No clear cut policy
Later, speaking to media persons Mr. Venkata Veeraiah alleged that the government lacked a clear cut policy on water management and timely supply of water to the farmers of the catchment area under the NSP.
“Notwithstanding the rise in water level to 540 feet in NSP, the government has failed to release water to the second and third zones under the NSP left canal,” he charged and alleged that the government's apathy has led to the flood devastation in Kurnool and Mahabubnagar districts last year.
Repair works
“Summer is the ideal time for execution of any repair works to the irrigation projects but the government chose to carry out the crucial modernisation works of NSP during the rainy season, he alleged and expressed concern over the quality of the ongoing modernisation works.
The allocation of the lion's share of fertilizers to the private dealers would prove counterproductive and lead to black-marketing, he warned and demanded that the government should ensure allocation of 50 per cent quota of fertilizers to the Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies for the benefit of the farmers.
The fertilizers like Nagarjuna urea and Godavari DAP, which are in high demand, should be made available to the farmers, he suggested. Telugu Rythu State secretary T. Veera Reddy, former MPP K. Ranga Reddy and others were present.
