Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has made arrangements for conducting election to Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts. The election will be conducted at the VMC Council Hall at 11 a.m. on Thursday.

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor would be elected by new corporators . The MLAs and MPs, who are the ex-officio members of the VMC, also have voting rights. The council has 59 corporators and, the MLAs elected from the city, and Vijayawada MP are ex-officio members.

If any Rajya Sabha member prefers Vijayawada city, he or she will also be members. During the last council, TDP Rajya Sabha member Nandamuri Harikrishna had opted to be member of the VMC Council. He, however, did not attend the council meetings.

According to the procedure, elections to the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts should be conducted within a week after the poll results were announced. But this time, the election was deferred until general election results were announced and subsequent formalities were completed. The peculiar situation has cropped up this time owing to the brief gap between the elections to the Assembly and the VMC Council.

Poll to the VMC was held on March 30 and counting of votes was scheduled for April 2 before it was postponed to May 12 following the court’s direction.

The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has been under the rule of special officers for over three-and-a-half years now.
