Marking the World Environment Day, The Hindu in association with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) distributed 3,000 saplings at various locations in and around Vijayawada on Sunday.

District Forest Officer K. Ashok Kumar, who launched the campaign at the Krishna District Lorry Owners Mutually Aided Co-operative Stores, an IOC dealership at Ganguru stressed the need for planting as many as saplings possible by every citizen. The saplings were sponsored by the district Forest Department for free.

He called upon youngsters to plant saplings at each and every occasion of their life like birthdays and make friendship with them.

“The micro environment of a tree will have two to three degrees lesser temperature compared to the larger environment. It is important to have trees in our living spaces. The Delhi government does not give building permissions if trees in the site are hacked,” Mr. Ashok Kumar said. “Each man releases carbon dioxide for about 23,000 times a day and all of that is taken in by trees to give us fresh air in return,” he added. He said Krishna district did not even have seven per cent of forest cover and anyone can approach the department seeking saplings for free.

IOCL Vijayawada Divisional Office Manager (Retail Sales) Jayanth Kumar Umakanth and chairperson of the cooperative stores T. Lakshmana Swami were present.
