An 87-km stretch of Krishna river from Vijayawada to Muktyala will dredged to create a waterway for moving cement required for construction of Amaravati, the new capital of Andhra Pradesh.
Minister of State for Road Transport & Highways, Shipping, Pon Radhakrishnan in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha said a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) had been entered into between Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and the Government of Andhra Pradesh to develop National Waterway-4 Kakinada- Puducherry canal system along with Krishna and Godavari rivers in Andhra Pradesh. Various studies, including delineation studies, have also been undertaken. The stretch between Vijayawada and Muktyala was being developed by undertaking dredging, the Minister said.
According to a Press Information Bureau release, the Minister in a reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha said that 111 inland waterways in the country had been declared National Waterways. A Techno Economic Feasibility Study (TEFs) had to be conducted for determining the technical viability of the inland waterway and only thereafter depending on the TEFs, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) is commissioned.
No fact finding team to Polavaram
Union Minister of State for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Sanwar Lal Jat in a written reply in Rajya Sabha said the Central Water Commission (CWC) had not suggested any fact finding visit to Polavaram dam to look into serious allegations at Polavaram dam site.
