Kin of P. Ramakrishna Dora, who allegedly committed suicide at Nunna police station, staged a dharna in front of the Government General Hospital (GGH) here on Thursday. They demanded action against the police and compensation to the bereaved family.

The victim, a native of Patapadu village in Vijayawada rural mandal, reportedly attempted suicide at Nunna police station on September 29. Ramakrishna died while undergoing treatment on October 3.

On Thursday, the family members of Ramakrishna staged a dharna along with the body alleging that Nunna Sub-Inspector Janakiram and homeguard V. Ramesh foisted false cases against him. Unable to bear the police torture, he consumed some pesticide in the police station, they alleged.

The protestors raised slogans demanding the arrest of the SI and home guard, who abetted Ramakrishna to resort to suicide.

Activists of Pedala Nyaya Vedika alleged that the SI implicated false cases against Ramakrishna and his family members. The accused SI, Janakiram, was acting at the behest of the home guard.

The Nunna police arrested Ramakrishna in a false case and kept him in the lockup, they said. Vexed with the highhandedness and harassment of the police, he consumed some poison, said Vedika leader T. Chiranjeevi.
