Education is the key to women’s empowerment. A girl child must be given equal educational opportunities and parents must keep bias at bay in upbringing of their children, said City Police Commissioner A.B. Venkatewara Rao.

Speaking at a function organised by The Hindu , in association with Samana Institute for Design Studies (SIDS), to mark the International Women’s Day on Sunday, Mr. Rao said women had found their way out of the kitchen and had come a long way. Touching upon several aspects related directly to the development of fairer sex, he said it was the responsibility of all sectors to promote equal dignity of women in society.

Krishna Zilla Parishad chairperson Gadde Anuradha expressed concern over the fact that despite promulgation of Nirbhaya Act, atrocities against women continued unabated. She said to realise the dream of equal opportunities for women, the girl child must be given access to education. Education empowers and so it would help achieve the long-cherished goal of ‘women empowerment’. All India Radio Station Director M. Krishna Kumari said this important day (Women’s Day) every year should be utilised to access the achievements and failures of women so as to enable the fairer sex identify gaps and plug them in the days ahead. Some of the 40 prominent women who were felicitated on the occasion were Ms. Gadde Anuradha, women entrepreneur Jogu Prasad, principal of Nalanda Degree College M. Anuradha, Nirupama of Swagruha Foods, Rashmi from Vasavya Mahila Mandali, president of Inner Wheel Club Sarita Lunani.
