The district slipped to eighth position in the State as the results of Class Ten examinations were out on Friday. The district recorded a pass percentage of 91.24 per cent which was encouraging.
With a pass percentage of 91.29 per cent, the district has slid to eighth place this year from seventh place recorded in 2012. The district recorded one of the better performances in the year 2011 when it came second, but the pass percentage was 91.32 per cent. Girls outperformed boys in many schools. Out of 23, 204 girl students, 21, 323 passed with the overall pass percentage being 91.89. In the boy’s category, 23, 927 passed out of 26, 388 students recording 90.67 pass percentage.
The district administration did try to bring in innovations and a sense of accountability. An online assessment programme, ‘Sampoorna Vidya Darshini,’ was introduced by District Collector S. Suresh Kumar in 2012 promising to bring some accountability into the system.
What has been encouraging, though, is the performance of students of English medium which was introduced in the State in 2008. The schools under the Guntur Municipal Corporation registered a pass percentage of 92 per cent. Out of 181 students who had appeared for the examination, 166 passed.
The students of Telugu medium recorded a modest pass percentage of 80. Out of 833 students who appeared for the examinations, 685 passed.
GMC Education Officer (I/C) Mohan Rao said that the corporation took steps to improve the performance of students by conducting special classes after class hours.
