Alternative sources of energy should be explored as early as possible as the petroleum reserves are depleting, according to Narasimha Rao, researcher at the Idaho National Laboratory in the USA.
During a day-long faculty development programme on the characterisation of nano material on the V.R Siddhartha Engineering College premises at Kanuru here on Friday, the researcher underlined the need for finding suitable alternative means of energy production as it was predicted that petroleum and fossil fuel reserves would exhaust in another 40 years.
The programme, conducted by the college departments of mechanical engineering and chemistry, was sponsored by the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme.
The programme was initiated by the Ministry of Human Resources Development. B.V. Appa Rao, professor from Warangal National Institute of Technology, delivered a lecture on the advantages and future applications of ‘nano technology' in space and storage. College principal Ch.V. Srinivas and Institute of Computer Education (Bhimavaram) professor B.V. Raju explained the utility of nano fibre owing to their tenacity and economic pricing. Mechanical engineering professor V. Balakrishna highlighted the importance of ‘finite element method' to characterise the properties of nano particles that are being used in structural and spatial programmes. Siddhartha College principal G. Sambasiva Rao gave away certificates to speakers at the programme. Some 150 professors and students participated.
